Seamless BGP Migration with Router Grafting

Network operators are under tremendous pressure to make their networks highly reliable to avoid service disruptions. Yet, operators often need to change the network to upgrade faulty equipment, deploy new services, and install new routers. Unfortunately, changes cause disruptions, forcing a trade-off between the benefit of the change and the disruption it will cause. In this paper we present ro...

Designing for Seamless Task Migration in MPUIs: Bridging Task-Disconnects

Today, the proliferation of mobile computing has changed the work environment forever. As a consequence, users are forced to orchestrate a complex interaction between multiple devices, moving data and information back and forth, to accomplish their tasks. Users trudge out USB key drives, remote desktop software, e-mail and network file storage in an attempt to mitigate this orchestration. We re...

Defragmentation-Based Capacity Enhancement for Fixed to Flexible-Grid Migration Scenarios in DWDM Networks

This paper investigates the most favorable conditions for a full defragmentation procedure when evolving from a fixed to a flexible-grid scenario. Results show that migrating legacy channels to flexible-grid formats can yield up to 50% more capacity for future traffic, provided these legacy channels are also spectrally re-planned.

Automatic Workload Driven Index Defragmentation

Queries that scan a B-Tree index can suffer significant I/O performance degradation due to index fragmentation. The task of determining if an index should be defragmented is challenging for database administrators (DBAs) since today’s database engines offer no support for quantifying the impact of defragmenting an index on query I/O performance. Furthermore, DBMSs only support defragmentation a...
